About Us

At AAIM, our success comes from employing a value-oriented focus in targeting total returns that aim to exceed relevant benchmarks. We accomplish this through our diligent analysis of securities, markets and companies.

AAIM currently manages approximately $925 million and has exposure to domestic and foreign fixed income and equities. We have two funds:

• American Assets Investment Fund (AAIF), a long-short value oriented general securities fund.
• American Assets Real Estate Securities Fund (AARESF), a long-short real estate securities fund.

Our Approach

We are value buyers. We believe that opportunity presents itself daily in the stock market to those investors that are most prepared and most disciplined.

We prepare with research. We underwrite securities and the industries they occupy with rigor and attention to detail. Before buying a security we have a firm grasp of what the company is worth and what the security is worth. We understand that stocks are not companies, they are pieces of paper and over long periods of time the values of successful companies are usually reflected in their shares, in the short term, they may diverge and create opportunity. We are prepared to act. We are looking for securities that are fundamentally mispriced.

Disciplined in risk management, we limit exposure to companies and sectors, and are thoughtful and careful about trading securities. We sell 'call and put' options as hedges and to create incremental income for the portfolio. The greatest risk mitigant, however, is research driven. It's the deep understanding of the basic business of the companies, and the inherent value of the securities, the fund owns. There are two distinct types of risks - the obvious one in which the fundamentals of a company deteriorate before it's too late to react; and the less obvious but much more prevalent risk of simply over-paying for a security. We mitigate both forms of risk through rigorous underwriting and careful portfolio management.
